The most common way to gain admission to the top engineering college in the country is the “Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)” to crack the JEE Advanced entrance exam. Each year, the top250,000 holders of JEE Main are eligible to apply for JEE Advanced.

So, if your dream is to go to IITs, but you are not a B Tech student, then only one question will pop up in your mind: “How to get admission to IIT without JEE 2022?” Is it possible?

Yes, there are other unique ways of getting admission into IITs.

Not many people know that IIT also offers admission through other avenues. There is a way for all these students to get into IITs without JEE.

You can enter IIT through JAM for MSc, GATE, Design courses UCEED, CEED, HSEE, CAT for MBA, and CSIR NET. So, if one has a dream to enter IIT, there are many other pathways and courses besides JEE.

Here, we are discussing these unique but popular ways.

GATE Exam

Those who miss out on admission to IITs at the undergraduate level can take a PG level entrance exam called the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).

Students who desire admission to IITs can secure a seat through GATE. GATE offers various courses like M Tech, Integrated MTech-PhD, and Ph.D.

GATE is conducted by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology in Mumbai, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, and Roorkee on a rotational basis.

Satisfying GATE eligibility is a mandatory requirement for admission in engineering/ technical/ architecture and Ph.D. programs. From this, you will get admission to IITs and other institutions supported by MHRD and other government institutions.

GATE exam is conducted in 29 subjects in engineering and basic science, as they can choose subjects as per their interests & respective specialization in UG courses. This exam is conducted in MCQ form.

CAT Exam

Most IITs have gone beyond just offering engineering-based courses and are moving towards becoming multidisciplinary institutions. Therefore, students who wish to study at IIT can study engineering and business aspects or consider developing a start-up business. They can also get admission to various courses through their management schools or departments. While each IIT has its School of Management admissions criteria, those who pass the CAT usually get shortlisted for interviews and further rounds.

The Common Admission Test (CAT) is a computer-based entrance exam for graduate management programs.

The test consists of three components:

  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC)
  • Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR)
  • Quantitative Ability (QA).

It is a 3-hour online exam with each section divided into one hour. Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) started this exam and used it to select students for their business administration programs (MBA or PGDM).

The test is administered annually by one IIM under a rotation policy. Indian Institutes of technology (IITs) use CAT scores to select students for their management courses. Early entry into IIT’s management program is through the Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET), discontinued in 2012.

IIT JAM Exam

JAM is an entrance examination for admission to MSc and other postgraduate science programs at IITs, IISc Bangalore, IISER, NISER, Bhubaneswar, NIT, and other institutions.

Those who pass the examination can apply for postgraduate-level degree courses such as MSc, Joint MSc-PhD, MSc-PhD dual degree, and other postgraduate level degree programs and integrated PhD courses. These doctoral programs at IIT offer high-quality education in their respective disciplines that rival the best. The curriculum of these programs is designed to allow students to develop their academic talents for a challenging and rewarding professional life.

JAM is conducted in 7 disciplines: mathematics, physics, chemistry, mathematical statistics, geology, economics, and biotechnology. The test is held online for over 3 hours and consists of 60 MCQ questions.

CSIR NET Exam

CSIR NET is an exam that provides training for research fellowships under the expert guidance of faculty members and scientists working in IITs/University Departments/National Laboratories and other institutions in the scientific field.

The test also determines the eligibility of candidates to work as lecturers/assistant professors in Indian universities/colleges.

Those who meet the JRF qualifications are also eligible to become Lecturers/Assistant Professors subject to the eligibility criteria set by the UGC. Some aspirants are declared successful for Lecturer/Assistant

Professor qualifications are based on their performance on the test. The test is conducted in a three-hour online mode and includes the MCQ.

UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for

Design)

Students intending to study at IIT can also apply through the Common Entry Test for Undergraduate Design, commonly known as UCEED. Applicants must pass Level 12 to apply for it. Those who pass

UCEED are eligible to enter B Des courses at IITs and other institutions.

The exam is divided into two parts, and the second part is the drawing part. Those wishing to apply to postgraduate (PG) courses will have to clear CEED (Common Entrance Exam for Design).

HSEE (Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Exam)

HSEE is an entrance examination for IITs conducted for the candidates who want to pursue a 5-year Integrated Master of Arts (MA) Programmes. The first two years of the course are common to all students, after which they split into two streams.

Stream assignments will be based on student preference, and academic performance over the previousthree semesters, and seat availability under each stream.
