Some would call it fulfilling a constant itch to go back to the world of Downton Abbey, and some would just call it a gift for the fans. But, whether you are an ardent fan of the series or have just stumbled across this article, you are in for a treat!
The Downton Abbey New Era is already out in the cinemas, and the fans have not been able to stop talking about it. After the hit series and then the making of the hit debut movie, the new addition to the franchise is something a little different than your regular Downton Abbey aristocracy feels.
You should be looking forward to two main plots -
- The cinema people are coming to Downton for a shoot for a new cinema. As countess Cora so beautifully describes in the trailer, ‘The modern world comes to Downton.’
- Plus, the Dowager Countess has come into possession of a villa in the south of France after the death of an old ‘Friend.'’
The excitement of the shoot and the mystery of the villa all unfold together in a beautiful mirage.
That is what you should be looking forward to!
What Is Downton Abbey?
If you are someone who has never watched the series or the previous movie and is just exploring the idea, then you have a big green signal from our end. You can download the series and the movies for free from Pirate Bay.
Downton Abbey started in the year 2010, and since then, it has received many accolades and critical acclamation from its ardent fans. It narrates the story of a count Of Grantham, Lord Grantham, and how he and his family navigates the aristocracy through the changing time at the beginning of the 20th century.
However, the story doesn't end here. Parallel to the characters upstairs, we also get a peek into the lives of the royal servants who are holding the place together.

- Scullery maids.
One of the casts of the series very beautifully describes the house to be a beautiful swan, and the downstairs being its legs. The actual ‘leg work’ remains downstairs to maintain the elegant flair of this house.
What The Movie Brings?
However, the first movie was a grand invitation of the king and queen of England to Downton; it maintained the aristocratic genre. However, the next movie goes beyond taking a dip into the modern world.
The cinema is the new addition to the 1930s post world war 1 world!
Through the plots and twists, we will see the making of a silent film and how it has started dying due to the talkies! So, what should they do now? Could they make it a talkie?
Can Downton provide the right environment for the talkie?
Through all this, we have our headstrong firstborn son of the Earl; of Grantham, Mary Crawley Talbort, managing everything like a queen.
The other story, however, takes us a little further back in time when the beautiful and young Dowager visited a friend in France in 1860, and something made this ‘friend’ write over this beautiful villa to the then Countess of Grantham, Violet Crawley.
Is it just a kind gesture from a friend? Or something more secretive than that. Well, half of the staff and family manage the cinema party, and half sail to the South of France to unravel the intentions of this mysterious friend.
What Will Surprise You?
Here are some of the elements of the film which will either surprise you or give you mild shock.
- Mary & Henry’s relationship does not seem to be the same. Could this just be a clash of passions or a lover’s quarrel? We do not find out since Henry Talbot, played by Matthew Goode, doesn't make an appearance in this film.
- Mary & Edith (Mary’s younger sister) seem to be best friends now! If you have watched the series, you would know why it is shocking.
- Does Robert find out a shocking truth about her mother at the Villa? Does it change everything about his past? Were the Edwardians not as honorable as they seemed?
- Is Lady Mary Talbot secretly talented as a voice actor, and our dear Mosely a phenomenal script writer?
All in all, it is not a bad watch. If you have the afternoon free, give it a go!
